Manuel Morán Orti

Biography: Manuel Morán Orti (Madrid, 1955) se doctoró en Filosofía y Letras con la especialidad de Historia Contemporánea por la Universidad de Navarra. Posteriormente fue becario del Centro de Estudios Históricos (Madrid) y del Instituto de Historia, Arte y Arqueología (Roma) del CSIC. Actualmente es profesor titular de la Universidad Europea de Madrid, donde imparte Teoría e Historia del Periodismo e Historia Contemporánea de España. Su investigación se centra en la crisis del Antiguo Régimen, que estudia desde la perspectiva de la historia política y la de la comunicación y la cultura escrita; ha dirigido, asimismo, diversos proyectos sobre esta materia financiados por instituciones públicas. Es autor de obras como Poder y gobierno en las Cortes de Cádiz (Premio de Estudios Políticos y Parlamentarios de las Cortes españolas), Revolución y reforma religiosa o La Miscelánea de Javier de Burgos: la prensa en el debate ideológico del Trienio Liberal, y coordinó la obra colectiva La oferta literaria en Madrid (1789-1833). Un estudio cuantitativo de la cultura del libro. Ha publicado más de cincuenta artículos científi cos y divulgativos sobre temas de su especialidad y colabora ocasionalmente con medios de comunicación.

Abstract:

This volume in the collection Serie 23 de abril reproduces the text of the lecture given by Manuel Morán Ortí during the Día del Libro [Day of the Book] on the publication and sale of books during the Old Regime, an epoch characterised by handcrafted paper printing techniques and the sale of books throughout mainland Spain and the American colonies as well as in local markets. The liberal revolution and the War of Independence triggered the changes that brought a transition to modernity, although the transformation of the world of the book did not follow until printing was mechanised and professional publishers emerged. This led to the New Typographical Regime of modern publishing, which continued until the advent of the radical changes being experienced today, and the innovations we are glimpsing for the future.
