Abstract:
This book offers readers a bilingual edition (featuring double-page original Latin text and the corresponding Spanish translation) of the fables of Phaedrus, a Macedonian living in Rome who moved in imperial circles, first as a slave and then as a freedman. Phaedrus translated an old collection of Greek fables into Latin, and he embellished them with a diverse range of material, at least some of which was original, for the purposes of veiled satire of the Roman scene of his time, with a stoic moralism and numerous themes from the cynics. He was, therefore, an original poet, not a mere compiler and transmitter of traditional materials. This edition includes all the manuscript material from Phaedrus's work. The translation, purely philological, respects the semantics, syntax, and the external form of the Latin iambic senarius, so there are the same number of lines in the Spanish version as verses in the original Latin.
