Colaborador del SCAR (Scientiphic committee of Antarctic Research) y del INDEEP (International network for Scientific investigation of Deep-Sea Ecosystems).

Abstract:

This monograph of the Fauna Ibérica Series is devoted to the twelve families (Acheliidae, Aschorhyn - chidae, Tanystylidae, Nymphonidae, Callipallenidae, Pallenopseidae, Phoxichilidiidae, Endeididae, Colossendeidae, Austrodecidae, Rhynchothoracidae and Pycnogonidae) that are grouped in the pycnogonid fauna widely known as sea spiders, of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. The monograph begins with an actual and complete overview of the main cha racters of the group. Then, the authors have made an effort to compile the most relevant informa tion on each species as well as the biological information which refers specifically to the Iberian and Balearic region: taxonomic position, biogeographic distribution at a worldwide and iberian level, life history, feeding biology if known and ecology, among others. These details are supported by an extensive bibliography. The descriptions, dichotomic keys and illustrations will facilitate the species identification. To assist this last purpose the volume includes a collection of colour plates to illustrate the adults of the main Ibero-Balearic species. The final part of the volume consists of a thorough, detailed nomenclatorial list of the taxa represented in the study area, which has been carried out by Miguel Ángel Alonso-Zarazaga. The making of such compilation was remarkably complex given the numerous formal names that have eventually been applied to some of the studied taxa.
