The book begins with an introduction to the biology of reptiles, including classification, morphology, natural history, and study methods. The main part of the book contains 15 families, 34 genera, and 60 species accounts, including illustrated dichotomic keys. The species accounts include sections devoted to morphology, skeleton, sexual dimorphism, genetic data, variation, distribution, habitat, activity, food habits, predators, parasites, reproduction, population structure, and conservation status. Additionally included is a detailed revision of the taxonomic nomenclature as well as updated distribution maps, a glossary and an extensive bibliography.
