Arqueología del Hain: investigaciones etnoarqueológicas en un sitio ceremonial de la sociedad selknam de Tierra del Fuego. Implicancias teóricas y metodológicas para los estudios arqueológicos

Biography: María Estela Mansur es licenciada en Antropología y doctora en Geología del Cuaternario y Prehistoria, egresada de las universidades de La Plata (Argentina) y Bordeaux I (Francia). Ha realizado investigaciones sobre la metodología de análisis microscópico de materiales arqueológicos y sobre la arqueología de Patagonia y Tierra del Fuego. Se desempeña como investigadora del CONICET y profesora en la Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego (Argentina)

Raquel Piqué Huerta (coordinacion)

Affiliation: Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (Barcelona, España)

Biography: Raquel Piqué i Huerta es doctora en Historia por la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Especialista en arqueobotánica, su interés se centra en la gestión de los recursos vegetales por parte de las sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras y primeras sociedades agrícolas. Ha llevado a cabo investigaciones arqueológicas en Cataluña, Tierra del Fuego, Senegal y Próximo Oriente. Actualmente es profesora en el Departament de Prehistòria de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Abstract:

The Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego is at the southernmost tip of South America. Until the early twentieth century it was home to a number of nomadic hunter-gatherer societies that occupied the island’s various different environments. This book describes one of them, the Selknam society, focusing in particular on the Hain ceremony, an initiation rite boys undertook as they passed into adult social life. During Hain youths were taken to a large hut, where they were subjected to a series of strong impressions. The archaeological research Ewan made in the place for the first time have led to excavate and analyze a site on which there was a Hain in the early twentieth century. The aim of this book is to present the results of these investigations, which allowed advance our knowledge of ritual sites and propose strategies to address for study.
