Abstract:

This book discusses the concept of virtue in Don Quixote, a subject little discussed in the extensive literature on Cervantes’ work, but nevertheless relevant in the cultural configuration of the Golden Age. The analysis is in fact an interpretation of what Don Quixote says and does in relation to what he calls the cardinal virtues. After a first chapter on the concept of virtue in Greek thought and Christian thought, a further four chapters look in turn at prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance in the remarks and behaviour of Don Quixote and other characters who cross the pages of the book. The re-reading of Don Quixote this book proposes offers a deeper understanding of the cultural fabric that framed the figure of Cervantes.
