Abstract:

This volume presents the findings of the scientific meeting on the topic of waste management in the cities of Roman Hispania held in Merida on 26-27 November 2009. It also aims to be a tribute to Xavier Dupré Raventos, who recognised the historical and archaeological interest of the study of waste management in the ancient world. That interest arises from two fundamental aspects. Firstly, the study of patterns of treatment and waste management, and secondly, the socio-economic interpretation of the materials found in waste tips. At this meeting the emphasis was placed on the first aspect, i.e., establishing the systems and means of waste disposal in the major cities of Hispania as a way of understanding cities in the Roman world and late antiquity.
