Abstract:

The March 11 terrorist attacks in Madrid led to a response by citizens in public spaces that underlines the need to understand the ritual practices of the society in which we live. Disasters, massacres and terrorist attacks are today memorialised in public places using a repertoire of acts of mourning that have become a common pattern in many Western countries. When a death is felt as being particularly tragic for society, either because the victims are drawn from the ranks of ordinary anonymous people or because of the death of a popular personality well-known from the media, mechanisms of mourning in public spaces come into play that we call grassroots memorials. There are references going back several centuries to mourning rituals in public spaces which were not sanctioned by institutions. However, the phenomenon that took place in the wake of the March 11 train attacks is linked to a ritual pattern spread by the media that became established over last two decades of the twentieth century. This book presents some of the research results of the "El Archivo del Duelo" [Archive of Mourning] project, one of the many initiatives that emerged, such as impromptu shrines, out of the need to do something after the attacks, a need that is repeated in different types of social actions which the attacks gave rise to.
