Abstract:

This play is about the thought of Prudentius (ca.348-415) who, aware that the end of his days was drawing close, felt the need to justify his ascetic Christian ideals. This poetry lays the ideological foundations for a new cultural identity inherited from the classical tradition and at the same time promoting the principles of Catholic doctrine. It was necessary to link Roman history to sacred history so as to create a common progress of humankind from the time of the coming of Christ within the "history of salvation," at the expense of a defeated Judaism, whose people would be assimilated to the barbarians and definitively dispossessed to continue suffering divine punishment, wandering until the end of time in a foreign land.
