Abstract:
La Gridonia is the only known dramatic work by Paravicinio and it is inspired by the Primaleón or Libro segundo del Palmerín (1512). Like other inventions of the age, Paravicinio’s invention, derived from the fantasy comedies and courtly diversions of the 16th century, combines elements of books of chivalry, pastorals, and mythologies. However, in “la Gridonia”, the word, costume and dream-like qualities take on special importance. The action, governed by the “poetics of the marvellous”, Neo-Platonist philosophy and religious teachings of the Baroque, takes place between Naples, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Constantinople and Ormedes, resulting in a vertiginous change of scenery and decor.
