Abstract:
This work represents a first approach from a Hispanic perspective to a key chapter in the post-war period. Based on the magazine Cuadernos del Congreso por la Libertad de la Cultura [Notebooks of the Congress for Cultural Freedom] (1953- 1965), a publication funded by the CIA through the Fairfield Foundation, it looks at the ideological activities of the Congreso por la Libertad de la Cultura en América Latina [Congress for Cultural Freedom in Latin America] and explores the “bridges” it built with dissents living in Franco’s Spain. The study reconstructs the stories of those exiled Republicans who made the biggest contribution to the U.S.campaign in the cultural arena, tracing the links between Hispanic and universal ideological processes, and reflecting on the controversial issue of covert funding and the autonomy culture in the context of the Cold War.
