Abstract:
One of CSIC’s functions is to inform, assist and advise public and private entities on science and technology, according to article 5 of its Articles of Association. As part of this function, the report Risks and Hazards of Extreme Marine Events, from the Science for Public Policy collection, is presented as a document aimed at public administrations and society in general. It explains the concept and characterisation of extreme marine events as exceptional fluctuations of natural phenomena of the climate system. The combination of anthropogenic factors and climate change projections predict an alarming increase in the impact of these events on marine ecosystems and coastal areas in the future. Three types of marine events are reviewed with the CSIC’s active involvement, in collaboration with other national and international entities: marine heatwaves, coastal phenomena and harmful algal blooms. In all these cases, the lines of research primarily aim to understand the mechanisms that generate extreme marine events and to establish early warning systems and predictive models to advise public administrations on marine environment-related risk management.
