Abstract:
One of the CSIC's functions is to inform, assist and advise public and private entities on science and technology, as stated in article 5 of its Articles of Association. As part of this function, the present report, When Freshwater Turns Salty. Scientific Challenges and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems, from the Science for Public Policy collection, is presented as a document aimed at public administrations and society in general. The salinisation of freshwater ecosystems (rivers, lakes, wetlands, etc.) is occurring all over the planet as a result of human activities and is widespread in Spain; it has, however, received little attention. This report explains the main causes of this phenomenon and its impact on ecosystems, the economy and human health. In addition, priority lines of research are discussed and management measures are proposed, including recommendations for improving public policies
