Abstract:
The cult of the body and the ability to modify, customise or improve it is one of the latest trends in contemporary culture. This volume thoroughly examines the effects on the body that following this trend can have and how new technologies can help people fulfil their wish to transcend their corporeal materiality and reject what may be abject to them about the body. In short, Ortega reviews the various medical technologies for displaying the body, the motivations that may lead to their use, and the possible effects of their application in the desire for bodily perfection. Furthermore, in a clear and concise way the author relates the ethical and psychological problems that may arise from the use of these technologies to modify, customise or enhance the body.
