Abstract:
This book reconstructs the history of meteorology from a socio-ideological standpoint. The period under study spans nearly two centuries, from the Enlightenment down to the end of the post-war period. The topics explored in the book, which aims to help the reader understand the relationship between science and technology in contemporary Spain, include the attention that the Navy, economic societies and medical academies paid to meteorology during the Enlightenment and the first half of the nineteenth century; the relationships between meteorology and the Madrid Astronomical Observatory and the Navy; the influence of ideological currents in the creation of the Instituto Central Meteorológico (Central Meteorological Institute); the relationship between agricultural and scientific associations and peripheral meteorology, the place of aerology and aeronautical meteorology between the wars, and the militarisation of the meteorological community during the Spanish Civil War.
