Abstract:
These pages bring readers the White book of the 2010 Malaspina expedition, an oceanographic circumnavigation covering 42,000 nautical miles, which sought primarily to assess the impact of global change on the deep ocean and explore the biodiversity of these waters. On a voyage lasting seven months, the oceanographic research vessels Hespérides and Sarmiento de Gamboa took more than 120,000 samples of water, air and plankton, and they recorded over 6,000 Gigabytes of data. This material will enable detailed research on physical oceanography, ocean optics, biogeochemistry, the role of atmospheric deposition, the presence of contaminants, biodiversity and microbial function, metabolic processes, and the structure and function of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. The White book is an up-to-date and interdisciplinary manual of the oceanographic working methods, protocols and techniques used during the expedition.
