Abstract:
The coincidence in space and time of the lives of Cuvier and Hegel is a surprising but little-know fact. They were both born a year apart as subjects of the same state (Württemberg). And they both died, a few months apart, during the first cholera epidemic to sweep Europe. They shared friends, and a phobia, Naturphilosophie, which could in fact be considered the third protagonist of this book. The Idealist movement, fundamentally German, with scientific and philosophical facets, was subjected to harsh criticism by both of them.
