Biography: Luis Sánchez-Muñoz is a senior research scientist of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC) of Madrid. Graduated in Geology in 1988, he received his PhD Thesis in Applied Mineralogy from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1992, after his researches in the microstructures and local structures of feldspars using NMR techniques. He completed a post-doctoral project between 1993 and 1996 in the Centre de Recherches sur la Synthèse et Chimie des Mineraux (CNRS) in Orléans (Francia) and the Electron Microscopy for Materials Research Institute in Antwerpen (Belgium). After nine years working in the Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry of the Jaume I University of Castellón, and in several private companies of the Spanish ceramic sector, he joined the CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) from 2005 to 2009. In 2009 he joined the Institute of Ceramics and Glasses (CSIC), and in 2019 he moved to the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC) of Madrid. Dr. Sánchez-Muñoz has published over 70 scientific articles and book chapters, 2 books, and he has participated in more than 100 international conferences. He has been invited to give lectures in numerous countries around the world regarding the structures and microstructures of feldspar minerals. His current research in NMR spectroscopy focuses on the details of the medium-range structures in minerals.

Leoncio Garrido Fernández (edicion)

Affiliation: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros (Madrid, España)

Biography: Leoncio Garrido graduated in Chemistry in 1977 and was granted the title Dr. in Chemical Sciences by the University of Valladolid, Spain, in 1982 for his work on cationic ring opening polymerization and statistical properties of the resulting polymers. He spent two years as postdoctoral fellow at the Polymer Research Center and Department of Chemistry, University of Cincinnati, Ohio. After two years in an industrial position in Madrid, Spain, as head of the research and development laboratory, he joined the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, from 1986 to 2000. Then, he moved to the Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros (ICTP), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, in Madrid, Spain. He was the Director of the ICTP from 2001 to 2005, and currently he is a research scientist at the Department of Physical Chemistry, ICTP. His research interest includes the development of NMR hardware and methods, with emphasis on diffusion and imaging, to investigate current problems in material science and biomedicine. Also, he is interested in the design of polymer based scaffolds for applications in tissue regeneration of the central nervous system.

Francisco Muñoz Fraile (edicion)

Affiliation: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio (Madrid, España)

Biography: Francisco Muñoz is BSc in Chemistry from the University of Alicante (1997) and PhD from the University Autonomous of Madrid (2003). He developed this PhD work at the Institute of Ceramics and Glass of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) on the synthesis and properties oxynitride phosphate sealing glasses. Between 2003 and 2005 he worked as postdoctoral associate at the University of Rennes, under a CNRS contract, and as associated professor in the University of Lille, France. Then moved to the Otto-Schott Institute of the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena (Germany) with a Marie-Curie fellowship until 2006, when he returned to Madrid with a research contract at the ICV-CSIC. From 2009, F. Muñoz holds a permanent position as Tenured Scientist at the same Institute. His main research concerns with the study of the properties and structure of glasses, as well as with the synthesis of oxynitride phosphate glasses, for applications in energy and optics, such as LiPON amorphous solid electrolytes and Nd-doped phosphate laser glasses. He has been so far principal investigator of three research projects and supervisor of two PhD theses and three MSc works. He is involved in the technical committee for the study of glass structure of the International Commission on Glass, from which he was chairman between 2011 and 2013, and is currently secretary of the Glass section of the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass. F. Muñoz is one of the organizers of the course on Solid State NMR that is held every two years at the Institute of Ceramics and Glass of CSIC and member of the scientific committee of the International Conference on Phosphate Materials.

Jesús Sanz Lázaro (edicion)

Affiliation: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (Madrid, España)

Biography: Jesús Sanz. Research Professor in Materials Science Institute (ICMM) of CSIC in 1987, has been Director of Energy, Environment and Sustainable Techniques Department of ICMM during the 2010-2018 period. In 1970, He obtained the Physical Sciences degree at the University of Zaragoza. He has the Doctoral degree of University of Louvain in 1976 (Belgium) and of Physics of the Complutense University (Madrid) in 1978. In the PHD work, NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate ion ordering in micas, extending afterwards NMR investigations to the study of silicate and phosphate cation solutions. He has participated in 40 projects, is author of 325 scientific works and has directed 7 doctoral thesis. In published works, structural information deduced by NMR spectroscopy has been used to understand mechanical properties of cements, lithium mobility in solid electrolytes and surface reactivity in metal supported catalysts. Since 1990 forms part of a joined scientific group devoted to improvement of electrode and electrolyte materials used in polymeric membranes and lithium batteries. He has been responsible of the NMR group of the ICMM Institute and participated in development of high-resolution NMR techniques (MAS, Decoupling, CP-MAS...) for solid materials. He has participated in specialized courses of National and European universities centred on the application of NMR spectroscopy to ceramic materials. Author of seven chapters describing the application of NMR technique to the study of clay-materials, has been frequently invited to national and international meetings. He has imparted 40 conferences and participated regularly in projects and scientific works evaluation.

Abstract:

This book provides a particular approach to the application of NMR spectroscopy for the characterization of structural and behavioral aspects of solids with the aim of resolving details at the local scale. The book is divided in four parts. The first part is dedicated to a basic and general theoretical background on the technique. The next section consist of five chapters on the contribution of NMR in the study of crystalline and non-crystalline solids, including minerals, ceramics, cements, glasses and glass-ceramics, in order to explore the local structure in that variety of natural and synthetic materials. The third part deals with materials and compounds of interest in catalysis, energy production, transformation, storage and related applications. Finally, the fourth section focuses on the characterization of active pharmaceutical ingredients, polymers and solid proteins. Aimed at dissemination of solid state NMR, this volume is an essential reading for researchers and students of solid-state science, but also a very useful instrument for academic teaching.
