Abstract:

With this present publication of theoretical works by the “Roman cavalier”, Doctor Bartolomeo Giovenardi, harpist in the Royal Chapel of Philip IV and then Charles II, the Musicology Department (at the CSIC’s Milà i Fontanals Institution) has joined Hispanic musicology’s growing interest in recovering the work of its main treatise-writers of the Baroque. The study covers two of Giovernardi’s handwritten manuscripts: Tratado de la Música (1634) and Nueva ciencia, demostración y ejecución de la perfecta teórica y método de la suspensión armónica… which constitute an important approximation to the understanding of the art of music that existed in the 17th century.
