Abstract:
Manuel Garcia’s Tratado [Complete treatise on the art of song] is one of the main sources of information about the teaching and aesthetics of bel canto in the first half of the nineteenth century. La práctica del canto según Manuel García [The practice of song according to Manuel Garcia] presents exercises, fermate and arias that were included in the Treatise. The exercises, which in the original work are interspersed among the theoretical discussions, are series of vocalisations with instrumental accompaniment designed to improve specific aspects of vocal technique. The arias, meanwhile, each dedicated to a tessitura and included as examples in the chapters examining artistic expression through sung discourse, are fragments of commercial operatic repertoire scored by Manuel Garcia and offered as a practical complement to the theoretical observations about operatic dramatic performance.
