Abstract:
This study reviews north-eastern cave art in the light of current theoretical and technical knowledge, with special emphasis on the art of the Horn of Africa. Rather than simply offer a compilation of the available information, the work analyses the interpretative hypotheses put forward on Neolithic origins in the region. New theories have been brought to bear to try to better understand the emergence of art in society, in conjunction with ethno-archaeological data on the pastoral peoples of the Sahara and NE Africa. The first spatial archaeological data infrastructure has also been implemented, one of most recent advances in information technology applied to geospatial information.
