Abstract:

With the death of Alfonso VII in 1157 and the coronation of his son Ferdinand II, began a new era in the history of the kingdom of Leon; an era which ended in 1230 when, upon the death of Alfonso IX, the Leonese throne passed to his son Ferdinand III of Castile. These circumstances make Leon an exceptional field for the study of the interactions between the nobility and royal power. This book discusses, from various different perspectives, the main Leonese and foreign noble families and in the kingdom engaged in political dealings with the last Leonese sovereigns: the court as a place of power and social interactions, the origin of the Courts, the territorial government and the rewards for vassal and the participation of the nobility in the relations between kingdoms, and the issue of dynastic succession. All these views show the symbiotic relationship existing between kings and nobles at the time.
