Abstract:

Several novels published since the nineteen eighties have as their protagonists individuals who share a common situation: they have lost what might be called their place in the world and feel, according to the term used by both Heidegger and Freud in their philosophical systems "unheimlich", that is they feel a strangeness about themselves and their surroundings. These are uprooted characters, with no memory of the past or family ties or other bonds to the present, condemned to wander through foreign spaces. What produced this thematic coincidence? Why has the narrative of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century come to be inhabited by vagrants? If, as Andreas Huyssen points out, one of the permanent laments of modernity is the loss of a better past, the memory of having lived in a circumscribed and secure space, with the feeling of having stable bonds rooted in a culture or as Susan Sontag argues "the two poles of the peculiarly modern feeling are nostalgia and utopia". What is the significance of this "lament" in postmodernity? Do we still feel nostalgia today? These are the questions this investigation tries to answer.
