Abstract:
Between the last quarter of the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth century the Philippines were the scene of an intermittent struggle between the two clerical bodies present in the territory –the Spanish religious orders and the native secular clergy– for control of the archipelago’s numerous parishes. The dispute was triggered by Spanish authorities’ mistrust of the native clergy who ran the churches in much of the country and the geopolitical role they gave to friars to shore up their control over the territory. The ecclesiastical question acted as a catalyst for the incipient Philippine nationalism, coming to the fore during the Cavite Mutiny of 1872, and considered to be a direct precursor of the country’s eventual independence.
