Abstract:
This book takes a fresh look at a period of the historiography of evangelisation in the Andes. Through a study of the cartas anuas, records of the provincial congregations, and catálogos de personal (staff catalogues), it discusses the uncertain nature of the missionary vocation of some Jesuits who lived in Peru between 1568 and 1640. These sources are eloquent testimony to the Society of Jesus’s institutionalisation and its need to maintain unity despite the geographical dispersion of its members. The opening chapters describe the situation of colonial Peru on the arrival of the Jesuits and plots out the borders of the province and the limits of the missionary’s domain. It then studies the travelling missions and their struggle against idolatry, the formation of "Indian workers" and the difficulties they faced in the learning indigenous languages.
