Abstract:
This book describes the activity in the Philippine archipelago of Fernando Valdes Tamón, Governor and Captain General of the Philippines, President of the Royal Court of Manila, and introducer of enlightened and reformist policy that was taking hold in Spain and in America during the period (1729 -1739) thanks to the work of the ministers of Philip V. The book starts with a biography of Valdés Tamón, which is followed by a series of chapters studying various aspects of Valdés¿s government based on an analysis of numerous unpublished documents. These include a large-scale cartographical exercise that culminated in Pedro Murillo Velarde¿s famous map. The book closes with some conclusions about the work of Valdés Tamón in context of the Spanish monarchy in the Philippines.
