Abstract:
The difficulty of interpreting the ideological character of the Spanish Civil War - an issue on which the last word is far from having been said - has generated controversy about the nature of the confrontation. This book brings together four separately-authored articles about the impact of the Civil War on religion, both in Spain and in the two major European democracies of the time, England and France. With a chapter devoted to each of these two countries ("The British churches before the Spanish Civil War" and "French Catholicism and the Spanish Civil War") and two chapters on Spain ("Civil War as a clash between Christians" and "The Jews and the Spanish Civil War"), the book offers a variety of information and reflections, from the perspectives of the different authors, on an issue that is important in understanding, in the European context of the moment, the ideological struggle that characterised the conflict.
