Pilar González Bernaldo de Quirós Affiliation: Université Paris Diderot (Francia) Biography: Pilar González Bernaldo de Quirós es doctora en Historia por la Universidad de la Sorbona. Actualmente es profesora de Historia y Civilización Latinoamericana en la Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7, donde es directora del laboratorio ICT. Es autora de Civilidad y política en los orígenes de la nación argentina (2001). Juan Suriano Affiliation: Universidad Nacional de General San Martín (Argentina) Biography: Juan Suriano es doctor en Historia por la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Es profesor de la Universidad Nacional de General San Martín, Buenos Aires, donde dirige la maestría en Historia. Abstract:
In the second half of the nineteenth century took place in Argentina a historical process that led to the consolidation of a concept of society, maintaining social cohesion and the emergence of collective action and public involvement. The authors of this book hold this theory of the existence of a social issue early in the city of Buenos Aires, so they propose an analysis of this social reality in Argentina and are wondering about the `invention of the social¿ and becoming "problem". For this study different areas as welfare, community social action paradigm, hygiene and health, control space of poverty that drove key social networks of interdependence, education, an area where they first came together in an effort to control a speech social rights and the presumption of public duty, or how the crisis of 1890 affected workers and elite representations about them, shifting the "social matter" to make it "labor question".
