Abstract:

The two manuscript notebooks kept in the Music Archive of the Cathedrals of Saragossa (E-Zac) and copied, about 1840, by the organist, violinist and composer Benigno Cariñena Salvador, shed light on the process of appearance and implementation of an idiomatic writing for pianoforte, within the school of Saragossa, one of the most outstanding organ schools in Spain. It is evident that church organists adapted rapidly to pianoforte, through a very new repertoire that obeyed the demands of the most influential local cultural circles; this fact, in time, helped the popularization and diffusion of the instrument, and thus, contributed mightily to what has been called a certain «democratization» of music (civil, bourgeois), hitherto only reserved for most aristocratic environments. These manuscripts compile a very diverse typology of works for several keyboard instruments: organ, harpsichord and pianoforte. The repertoire is formed by liturgical pieces, sonatas, trios, transcription of overtures or fragments of Italian operas, variations and compositions for vocal soloists with an accompaniment for the keyboard. The composers are local —R. Ferreñac, F. Garcés and V. Metón—, Spanish —J. Lidón— and foreign —F. J. Haydn, J. L. Adam, I. Pleyel, V. Bellini, G. A. Rossini, G. Paccini, L. Ricci, G. Donizetti—. This compilation presents as positive the fact that it may serve as a model, or even as a paradigm of what they meant those many repertory notebooks, miscellaneous, that circulated at the time and in the private sector with some regularity in manuscript copies around the globe hispanic. The concrete music chosen here —a total of six unpublished works, distributed in three genres: liturgical music, a reduction of orchestral music and variations— constitute a clear example of the instrumental ambivalence which exists in both documents, representing, at the same time, a repertoire selection of an outstanding interest for keyboard players nowadays.
