Abstract:
The Pompeian theatre on the Campus Martius was always, in architectural, urban, social and symbolic terms, much more than just a venue for plays. From the architectural point of view, it is an absolute prototype that significantly influenced both the history of theatre architecture and Roman construction, due to its considerable technical advances and the wide variety of architectural and decorative solutions used in its construction. This book aims simply to take a fresh look at the Roman theatre from the theoretical standpoint, and reconsider the archaeological evidence anew, based on the study of form and architecture of the genesis of the model of the theatre in Rome, taking as its starting point the “stone memory” that the preserved building represents.
