Abstract:
This monograph on "being gypsy" both in school and out of it, draws upon the author’s ethnographic research on the phenomenon of the education of a small group of gypsy families in a working-class district in the outskirts of Valencia. The ethnographic study starts in school, where the author had been conducting research which involved living among the gypsy families for eight months, and through this field work she got to know their culture and learned to understand from their point of view how gypsy children and their families view school as an institution. The work aims to contribute to the fight against social and cultural inequality.
