Abstract:
After studying a dozen censuses from Ferrol, Coruña, and Santiago de Compostela covering the period from the second half of the nineteenth to the first quarter of the twentieth, this book enumerates the main professional activities in the form of a dictionary. For each entry the author offers the reader a description of the profession concerned, the census from which the name was taken, and the number of occurrences. The data provided by these documentary sources on the three most populous cities in the province of La Coruña provide valuable information with which to understand Galician society of the time, and to infer information about the pace of social modernisation in an era of significant economic change and policies on the history of the incorporation of women into the workforce, and on the evolving world of work and family.
