Abstract:
This book studies the development of geophysics in contemporary Spain, covering the more institutional and economic aspects of geophysics. In particular it addresses the rising professional status of the discipline; the entities (observatories, institutes, companies) in which it was promoted; the relationships between geophysicists and the Society of Jesus; industrial geophysical prospecting; the interrelation between geophysics and the economic policies of successive governments; and the role of geophysics and geophysicists in society. In short, the study aims to help show how science is inseparable from the society into which it is born, a society which, in turn, depends on the progress of science.
