Abstract:

One of the CSIC’s roles is to inform, assist and advise public and private entities on science and technology, as stated in article 5 of its Articles of Association. As part of this function, the report Light pollution, the dangers of an increasingly illuminated world, from the Science for Public Policy collection, is presented as a document aimed at administrations and society in general. It outlines the challenge of tackling light pollution, an environmental problem caused by the increasing proliferation of artificial light on our planet, which has become one of the drivers of the unprecedented global change we are witnessing. It reviews its potential impacts, which extend to diverse areas, such as environmental and human health, astronomical observations and our cultural heritage, and includes some of the CSIC’s actions and lines of research designed to respond to this challenge.
