Abstract:

One of the CSIC’s functions is to inform, assist and advise public and private entities on science and technology, as stated in article 5 of its Articles of Association. As part of this role, the report entitled Metabolic Diseases: Epidemics of the 21st Century, from the Science for Public Policy collection, is presented as a document aimed at public administrations and society in general. This report analyses the social, health and economic problem posed by the increase in obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, aggravated by lifestyle and exposure to environmental risk factors. Finally, it addresses the organisation’s most important lines of research to solve the current challenges of metabolic diseases, with the aim of promoting the transfer of the basic knowledge generated at the CSIC to companies, the public sector and society.
