Abstract:

The photographs in this small book show images of some of the species of Iberian wildlife as they were immortalised José Maria and Luis Benedito, taxidermists at the National Museum of Natural Sciences, in the early decades of the twentieth century. The images are accompanied by texts describing the Benedito brothers’ biological groups and describe a technique that combines the expressiveness of the sculptor with the knowledge of the naturalist. The groups of Iberian birds and mammals often consist of pairs with their offspring, enabling morphological variants corresponding to individuals of different sex and age to be shown. The animals are placed in a fragment of their natural habitat, reflecting the quest for scientific rigour that has always accompanied this technique in natural history museums.
