Abstract:

On approaching the former role of scribes in the town council many questions arise: What duties and responsibilities did they have? What role did they play inside and outside the council? Was their work different from the other officials who were working temporarily in the same notaries¿ ofices in the council? What titles could a council scribe hold? Was it obligatory for them to be a notary public at the same time? Was the council archivist on the same level? What strategies did people follow to reach the position of council scribe? What weight did inbreeding and social networks have in the mechanisms for achieving the office?
