Abstract:

The present revisión intends to clarify the systematic and nomenclatural problems of the taxa of Agrostis present in the Iberian Península, pointing out their relationship with the remaining European and North African taxa. To this end, several taxonomic characters have been considered, such as the presence of stolons or rhizomes, the morphology of the leaves, and particularly the leaf anatomy which, although it may not be used to characterize large groups, is useful to sepárate related Species. In regard to the leaf epidermis, the adaxial surface is very similar in all Species, except A. curtisii; the abaxial surface provides a good basis for the differentiation of some taxa. The characters of the lígula of the leaf, of the panicule and, above all, of the spikelet (morphology of the glumes, lemmae, paleae, etc.) have also been used; in regard to the epidermis of the lemma, the seven types of networks proposed by WIDÉN (1971) have been recognized, and those of A. truncatula, A. reuteri and A. nebulosa are described. Further data to be considered for the separation of the taxa are those of palynology (ROMERO GARCIA & BLANCA, 1985, 1986), cytotaxonomy (ROMERO GARCÍA & BLANCA, 1988), biogeography, ecology and phytosociology. After the analysis of all characters, and bearing in mind the relationship with other genera, as well as the available delimitations of subgenera and sections, the genus Agrostis is considered to have two evolutive lines, which are made to correspond with two subgenera: Agrostis, the more polymorphic one, including sections Agrostis, Vilfa and Aperopsis, and subgen. Zingrostis, which is newly described in this revisión.
