Abstract:
This monograph represents an updated revision of the 99 taxa (89 species and 10 subspecies) which comprise the genus Carex on the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. In the first part (Introduction) the origin of the genus name is commented upon, the principal characteristics (morphological and cytogenetic) of the genus are described, and the most widely accepted current classification into subgenera is presented. In the second chapter a key to all the species is provided, followed by species descriptions, according to the model used in Flora iberica. In addition to morphological data, the descriptions contain all known chromosome counts for Iberian taxa, as well as ecological and distributional data for each taxa, including the Iberian provinces in which they occur. The descriptions are accompanied by numerous observations and commentaries concerning taxonomic and nomenclatural considerations. An effort has been made to revise the nomenclature, and all names which have been applied within the study area are included. Locotype indications are given for each taxon. Twenty-four taxa are illustrated, including all endemisms, and seven additional figures which help explain certain characters are also provided.
