Las líneas de investigación que ha cultivado son el derecho islámico en época medieval, la historia de las relaciones hispano-norteafricanas durante los siglos XVI y XVII y las sociedades del occidente islámico en las fuentes hagiográficas. Ha realizado varias estancias de investigación en el Instituto de Lenguas y Culturas del Mediterráneo y Oriente Próximo del Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, donde actualmente colabora en varios proyectos de investigación como Profesor vinculado ad honorem. Abstract:

Understanding the role of the qadi or judge helps explain the evolution of judicial administration and its specific features in Al-Andalus and the Islamic West. The object of this volume, XVIII in the Onomastic-Biographical Studies of Al-Andalus series, is to focus on Qadis located in the geographical area concerned and highlight their biographies. The works collected here examine the relationships between Qadis and the powerful, other judges and society as a whole; they include a study of Qadis’ legal training, their political and economic aspirations, the criteria for their appointment and dismissal, and analyse certain judgments conditioned by political power, and the role of women faquis (experts in Islamic law), who carried out outstanding scholarship in the predominantly male world of religious and legal knowledge in Al-Andalus.
