Abstract:
Charity plays a key role in Muslims' religious beliefs, since it is an inescapable aspect of the relationship between God and man. It is also an expression of religious faith in the social interactions between human beings. The significance of charity is strongly linked to the Koranic message, where is perceived as a religious and moral obligation. In relation to the concept of charity, religious texts also contain a constant call for compassion for others. This book provides a basic conceptual framework and analyses a comprehensive record of examples of how Muslims put into practice the Koranic injunction to give alms, and the exhortations to show compassion for others. It encompasses a series of works that explore the various roles charity and compassion have played. The geographical context in which it fits the book is Andalusia, with some sporadic incursions into North Africa and the pre-modern Islamic Orient from the viewpoint that examining the expression of charitable and compassionate impulses in different historical scenarios can enrich the debate.
