Biography: Javier de Hoz Bravo ha sido catedrático de Filología Griega en las universidades de Sevilla (l967-l969), Salamanca (l969-1989) y Complutense de Madrid (1989- 2010), en la que actualmente es emérito. Es autor, solo o en colaboración, de cuatro libros (1974, 1979, 1987, 1996) y de unos doscientos artículos en revistas de investigación. Ha dado conferencias y seminarios en Alemania, Austria, Bélgica, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Italia y Portugal. De ellas se pueden destacar Vortrag in memoriam Rudolf Thurneysen 1988 (Universidad de Bonn), conferencia en el Hommage rendu à Michel Lejeune, organizado por el Instituto de Francia, conferencia inaugural del 12th International Congress of Celtic Studies (Aberystwyth) y un curso como profesor invitado en la École Pratique des Hautes Études (Sorbonne). Es miembro del consejo de redacción de varias revistas, del patronato de la Fundación Pastor de estudios clásicos, miembro extranjero del Istituto Nazionale di Studi Etruschi ed Italici (Florencia) y presidente de la comisión para los Coloquios Internacionales sobre Lenguas y Culturas Paleohispánicas. Sus intereses fundamentales son la filología griega —en particular el periodo arcaico, la epigrafía y la tragedia—, las lenguas antiguas del Mediterráneo, con especial atención a las del extremo occidente, la historia de la escritura y la etnolingüística del mundo antiguo.

Abstract:

This is the second volume of the linguistic history of the Iberian Peninsula in ancient times, (Historia lingüística de la Península Ibérica en la antigüedad) a wide-ranging work studying paleohispanic linguistic history from a multidisciplinary approach, which has been published in four volumes. The first, which appeared in 2010, was devoted to the southern and Tartessian world understood in a broad sense; the second covers the Iberian world up until the arrival of the Romans; the third studies the southern and Iberian world in Roman times; and the fourth is devoted to peripheral areas and the history of the discipline. The volume opens with a detailed presentation of pre-Roman Iberian culture. It continues with a chapter on writing systems in the Iberian world, a detailed description of the phonetics, grammar and lexicon of the Iberian language, and an analysis of its epigraphy; it concludes with a study on the process of Indo-Europeanisation of the Iberian Peninsula up until the point where the language emerging from this process began to leave written records.
