Abstract:

In this volume we were intended to analyze the vocabulary of the translation of the Gospel from Greek into Old Church Slavonic that can be found in the four "canonical" OCS Gospel manuscripts: Zographensis, Marianus, Assemanianus and Liber Savvae. And concretely, we tried to detect the Greek loanwords and calques that appeared as a result of that translation, and distinguish them from the old loanwords already integrated into the language. Due to the wide extent of the subject, we focused on a part of the speech: substantives and adjectives derivated from substantives. The innovative aspect of this work is the analysis of the OCS vocabulary organized in semantic domains. With this aim, we followed the example of J. P. Louw - E. A. Nida's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on semantic domains, in which they arrange the vocabulary of the Greek New Testament in 93 semantic domains. We chose three of them: "Natural substances", "Plants" and "Artefacts". This way, we could compare the higher or lower tendency of each semantic domain to assimilate foreign elements, and the extent to which they could have been influenced by the translation of the Gospel. This work consists of a lexical database through which we have studied the semantic relationships between the terms of both languages, the conceptual structure of the OCS vocabulary, the nuances of the meaning of every word depending on its context, as well as the possible correspondences between the Slavic and Greek textual variants. Finally, the research on the OCS vocabulary based on semantic domains can provide us interesting clues about the culture and society of the ancient Slavs. Of course, the linguistic data must be cross- checked against the archaeological findings and the recounts of the historical sources.
